Returning players key to your offense:
The Mid-America Christian University Evangels are coming off their most successful season to date within the Sooner Athletic Conference and the NAIA. The Evangels finished in a tie for third in the conference with USAO with a 9-7 league record. MACU also jumped into the NAIA Top 25 for the first time in school history, peaking at No. 23. SAC Player of the Year and National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Player of the Year Charlie Shorter led the Evangels to their 20th NCCAA Central Regional Championship and a fifth-place finish at the NCCAA National Tournament after narrowly missing out on the NAIA Tourney. But the Evangels will have huge holes to fill, with the departure of Shorter and All-Conference point guard Camilo Valencia. MACU will be anchored by SAC Newcomer of the Year and second-team All-Conference performer Angelo Lewis, who is the Evangels’ leading returning scorer (14.6 ppg) and rebounder (8.2 rpg). JUCO Division III All-America Semar Farris is expected to take the reins as the starting point guard and contribute immediately. The Evangels also welcome NCAA D-I transfer Luke Mergerson, who comes to MACU from Texas State. Mergerson, a 6-8 center, is expected the give the Evangels a much needed inside scoring presence down low. Overall, the Evangels return two starters and four rotational players from last year’s squad.
